Women Officers in Armed Forces

Shortage of officers in army, air force and navy has been a much talked about issue since last many years. Though denied by the senior brass of three services; it is well known that in order to meet the shortages, even selection norms were proposed to be diluted. Luckily that never happened!
Government of India also appointed many Committees to suggest improvements in the
parameters of “attractiveness” for a career in the armed forces. Notwithstanding the fact that, in addition to above, the authorities were also pinning their hopes on the
sixth Pay Commission to provide the desired stimulus to youngsters to join services.
However, the shortages continue. Numerous surveys have confirmed that defence as career on a nine point scale comes around 7th or 8th in order of preference. National Defence Academy, Pune and Officers Training Academies at Chennai and Dehradun
thus continue to report shortfalls in the intakes ab initio. And guess, who has finally come to the rescue of armed forces? It is the women officers! According to
a Government notification, women officers will now be serving the Indian Armed Forces for full tenure.
