Foreign Exchange Markets, Fiscal Policy and Monetary Policy |
|
Of late the volatility in the exchange rates has been unprecedented. The fall in the value of Indian rupee has been extremely rapid probably far greater than the speed at which it appreciated before. For example examine the exchange rates in 2006, 2007 and 2008. If Year 2006 was of stability, Year 2007 saw consideable appreciation of rupee. In February 2008 the value of rupee was at peak of Rs 39.27 and in April it stood at Rs 39.89. However, in July 2008, the value of US dollar increased to Rs 42.73 and further jumped to whopping Rs 50.62 in November 2008. It currently hovers around at Rs 48 - 49. Considerable appreciation in 2007 followed by more than substantial depreciation in 2008 leaves one with a question. Has the foreign exchange sector become liberalised enough in India for rupee to be classified as floating? The volatility in the recent past indeed seems to suggest so. Ironically, IMF classifies rupee under ‘managed float’. |
